Yesterday was the first Monday of May and you know what that means, right? Our girl Gigi Hadid made an appearance on the blue carpet at the 2025 Met Gala. This year’s exhibition is “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style”, with the dress code “Tailored for You”, celebrating the rich history and cultural significance of Black dandyism in fashion. The dress code encouraged attendees to interpret the theme personally, emphasizing individuality within the framework of classic tailoring.
Gigi understood the assignment — again! Styled by Gab Karefa-Johnson, she wore a custom Miu Miu gold velvet gown embellished with crystal embroidery. She paired the look with dangly silver earrings from the London-based jewelry brand De Beers. Her dress served as a celebration and homage to Zelda Wynn Valdes, a fashion designer from the late 1940s. Valdes grew up in her uncle’s men’s tailoring shop and later brought those skills to her own dressmaking business in Washington Heights. She elevated tailoring by adapting it to the female form. “She mixed these strong fashion pillars together in a way that makes you feel like you’re really expressing yourself individually. I hope that this is a dress maybe she would’ve designed for me. It’s has tailoring and glamour“, Gigi explained.
Additionally, the dress resembles a Balmain gown worn by singer Josephine Baker back in 1951. She was a groundbreaking performer, a fearless fashion icon, and a committed activist— and one of the first internationally recognized Black female film stars. The gown featured a dramatic train and drop-waist ruching, capturing the essence of glamour from that era. Complementing her gown, Gigi styled her hair in retro Victory Rolls, a popular 40s hairstyle. This choice further emphasized the homage to the era’s fashion and beauty icons.
